Oxyfluorfen is a pre-emergent and post-emergent broadleaf and grassy weed herbicide and is registered for use on a variety of field, fruit, and vegetable crops, ornamentals as well as non-crop sites. It is a selective herbicide for the control of certain annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in orchards, grapes, tobacco, pepper, tomato, coffee, rice, cabbage crops, soybean, cotton, peanuts, sunflower, onions.By forming a chemical barrier on the soil surface, oxyfluorfen affects plants at emergence. Because of the length of oxyfluorfen soil half-life, this barrier may last up to three months and all plants attempting to emerge through the soil surface will be affected through contact. Oxyfluorfen also affects plants through direct contact. Oxyfluorfen is only a contact herbicide when used as a post-emergent and will only effect target plants with the add of light. If there is no light to activate the product, it will have little effect in harming the target plant to disrupt cell membranes.

Oxyfluorfen is most frequently used in a liquid formulation for food crops and as a granular formulation for ornamental nursery crops. Oxyfluorfen-based products are much more reliable as a pre-emergent. When applied at the right time prior to target weed seed germination, it should sufficiently prevent weed growth. Post-emergently, Oxyfluorfen is good to use as a contact herbicide but it will only harm the areas of the plant that have been sprayed. The active will also need sunlight to activate the product so it can burn the target plants.

While Oxyfluorfen has found a lot of use in agricultural settings, it can also be used to control weeds in residential areas, particularly for weeds that creep up on patios, porches, sidewalks and other areas.
